Accessible Websites
Legislation and guidelines from government emphasise that all aspects of website service delivery should be fully accessible by the widest possible audience. In practice this means ensuring that sites are designed to help a wide variety of users who may have less than perfect ability to either see the screen or navigate the site using a mouse.
uc4 has practical experience of accessible website projects some for organisations and charities supporting the partially sighted. Our approach is designed to make sites easier to use for the larger numbers of visitors who can benefit from small improvements in accessibility as well as helping those who need help from screen readers and other types of assistive technology. Our projects have included a number of features in common:
- Easily adjustable text size.
- Choice of most helpful combinations of text and background colours.
- Navigation using a keyboard as well as a mouse
- Design for use in conjunction with speech output systems
